Russia is a stunningly beautiful country.  Here, between Magadan and Ola, the sun set last November over the Sea of Okhotsk.  Although it was gorgeous, it was bitterly cold.

Cemetery in Magadan:  This is a typical scene in the cemetery in Magadan, much fencing around the graves with overgrowth.  Old tires are set ablaze to thaw the ground to dig graves during the winter.  The red Soviet star in the photo depicts a former Soviet party or government official.  (Nov 07.)

Sr. Jean Marie is visiting Maria in photo below.  Maria, raised in the Ukraine, was arrested with most of her family when the Soviets came to their family farm after World War II to enforce collectivization.  Her family resisted the collectivization, causing their arrests.  She escaped into the forest with other prisoners.  The men who were captured with her were shot and she was sent to Magadan to serve time in Stalin's gulags.  Sr. Jean Marie is holding a photo of one of Maria's daughters who died.  Maria has happy memories of receiving America's Lend Lease packages during World War II.
