Bishop Kyrill Klimovich, Diocese of St. Joseph centered in Irkutsk, and Fr. Michael Shields, Church of the Nativity in Magadan, stand behind six mothers and their babies at a luncheon for them at the Church in September, 2008.  From left to right (seated) are Alexandra (Sasha) due in February, Alla with daughter Alina, Katya with daughter Arina, Zhenya and daughter, Olga with daughter Tamara, and Galina with daughter Olga.  Bishop Kyrill was in Magadan to bless the new stained glass windows in the Church.  (Sept 08).

Alexander Alexandrevich (son of Alexander) was born to Valentina in February, 2008.  He is pictured here with his mother and father.  Fr. Dave provided to Alexander his first clothing.  When he was born his parents did not have money to purchase clothes for him.  He is now home with his mother and grandmother after staying in the hospital due to being underweight at birth.

Alexander lives in an orphanage in Magadan which Nativity Inn helps support.  He is the fifth child born to his parents, the previous four having been stillborn.  He was born a Down's baby and so his parents put him in an orphanage and adopted a healthy baby.  He responds with a beautiful smile when someone leans over his crib.  His future is not bright however in Russia.  (Nov 07.)

Olga and her two-year old son in their old apartment which was in a building in the small fishing village of Ola.  The building was not fit for habitation, much less in which to raise a small child.  Olga recently gave birth to her second child.  Her older son, Kyrill, did not have any toys when we visited with her in November, 2007, and so he clutched a small stuffed animal we brought to him.  They slept on the floor, not having money for food much less furniture.  They have been helped by Nativity Inn and no longer live in the apartment pictured here.

A mother with her two children.  The environment in which mothers in Magadan must raise their babies is often run-down, dilapidated and unsafe.  Nativity Inn's help is desperately needed in these cases to provide such basic necessities as baby formula, diapers, food, and money for utility payments.  (2007.)

For Daniil, his younger brother, and mother, Olga, unemployment and poverty is a constant in their lives.  It is not clear what would have happened to them without Nativity Inn's support.

Meet Misha.  Before he was born the clinic staff in Magadan told his parents he would be born encephalitic and profoundly disabled.  The clinic staff pressured them to abort him.  Kneeling before the Blessed Sacrament in prayer they chose life.  Later they said, "He is our son and we will love him no matter what."  He was born absolutely healthy.  Thankfully, Fr. Mike and Fr. Dave were there to support and encourage his parents.

When I was in Magadan recently Misha's mother sought me out to tell me how much better her family's life is due to the Church.
